As I noted elsewhere this could be the establishment’s “Vietnam”. As the months of restriction and economic hardship stretch into years, and dare we believe them decades the unrest will grow. With the establishment unwilling to even forthrightly investigate the virus’ origins the pressure will inevitably rise.

There is some element of moral hazard here. Once institutions are empowered by emergency a reinforcing feedback loop often emerges. We’ll still be taking off our shoes at aiports a generation after 9/11.
