The puzzle of the human heart

The story of Franz Jägerstätter, the Austrian altar server who was executed for conscientious objection to the Third Reich, was made into a movie by Terrence Malick, director the Thin Red Line.

The title derives from a phrase found in the New Testament, the Epistle to the Colossians 3:3: “For you died, and [now] your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

At the heart of every martyr’s story is a mystery. Why does an ordinary, unlikely man choose this path? It is probably not an intellectual decision but something like a seizure which you would like to banish but won’t.

Or to quote from the Thin Red Line: “Where does it come from? Who lit this flame in us? No war can put it out, conquer it.” Perhaps God, or what introduces Himself as God, is the most dangerous thing you can hear.
