Why the Texas power grid failed

The short answer by Bill King: not enough design margin. Market forces would not pay for reserve reliability and renewables could not provide it.

Thus Texas, like any other physical system was shown vulnerable to the low probability, high impact event. One can never completely anticipate the future so reserves are always needed against the unforeseen.

You can never be too rich or too thin nor without some spare capacity as an ace in the hole.
